The construction and civil engineering company Graham has recently been contracted by LLWR to carry out the initial ‘enabling works’ for LLWR’s Repository Development Programme under the terms of an £8M contract.
Graham was appointed to this contract through the Engineering Design and Construction Framework, with the commencement of this contract scheduled to take place in January 2020 while the main construction works on the Repository Development will begin in April, continuing for a further 20 months.
The two-year contract will entail the delivery of key infrastructure elements such as construction compounds, haul roads, material stockpile areas and drainage lagoons, that will allow the final cap over waste disposal vaults and legacy trenches.
The Head of Programmes and Projects at LLWR, Jonathan Evans stated: “It is worth recognising that whilst we will be continuing to work with Graham, the Enabling Works contract is new and will operate entirely separately from the existing Framework with a defined scope and a different commercial delivery model.”
The Contracts Director of Civil Engineering at Graham, Steve Beattie added: “We are delighted to have been selected by LLWR for the Enabling Works contract, which is testament to the successful delivery of the joint objectives and project deliverables that shaped our Engineering Design and Construction Framework portfolio over the last five years.
“It continues our established relationship with LLWR and is a positive reflection of the strength and professionalism of our site team. We place a strong emphasis on repeat business, and this contract demonstrates the impact that our industry leading processes have made in the development of a mutually beneficial long-term partnership.”
Efforts have been made to acquire large volumes of the material that will be needed in the construction of the final cap that will cover waste disposal vaults and legacy trenches, a structure which Graham will be responsible for delivering as part of the contract.
