Aggregate Industries has been awarded the flood defence contract for the Medway Riverside Development in Kent.
The firm was awarded the flood defence contract to provide a sub-base aggregate at the Strood Waterfront project in Medway, Kent. The development works will see 1,600 homes constructed along with business and recreational spaces.
The riverside development has reserved £3.5million for flood defence works expected to be finished by July this year. So far Aggregate has moved 90,000 tonnes of 6F4 granite and a further 30,000 tonnes is expected to be delivered in the next few months.
Leader of Medway Council Cllr Alan Jarett said: “The flood defence works are the first step in the transformation of Strood Waterfront. This project is paving the way for future development of the site including hundreds of homes, including affordable housing, in a fantastic location with breathtaking views across the river to Rochester Castle and is close to two railway stations.
“The work to transform Strood Waterfront also compliments the ongoing Local Growth Fund works in Strood Town Centre. The regeneration for Strood will provide growth for all and reaffirm that Strood is a great place to live, work, learn and visit.”
Aggregate was chosen by contractors Ovenden Earth Moving and Volker Stevin. Aggregate has access to multiple quarries and low carbon logistics infrastructure along with a partnership with Non-Tipping Trucks (NTT) and Arctic Haulage Fleet.
The trucks are expected to move 1,200 tonnes a day in order to complete the project in the time frame provided. Aggregate industries work with a number of drainage and flood defence options including asphalt, aggregates, concrete, and block paving.
