£22.7m waste contract awarded

Rochford District Council and SITA UK have agreed to extend their contract for waste collection and street cleaning by another seven years.

The waste collection and street cleaning contract between Rochdale District Council and SITA UK has been extended by seven years.

The current contract, which was originally signed in April 2008, obligates SITA UK to provide residual waste, recycling, and compostable material collections in the district. The company is also responsible for street cleaning services until March 2015.

The extension of the contract, worth £22.7m, will see SITA UK continue with collection and cleaning until March 2022. The contract will ensure all previous services are retained, but more resources and new equipment will be deployed for the street cleaning service.

Rochdale District Council said the reason for extending the contract was due to an increase in recycling rates.

Speaking of the contract extension, Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Councillor Keith Gordon, said: “We have been very happy with the excellent work SITA UK has undertaken to help us maintain our status as the top recycling authority in England.

“We hope we can continue building on the accomplishments of the last seven years and achieve even greater success in the future.”
