Severfield lend expertise to support local gym

Michaela Lindridge, Severfield Head of Environmental, Social and Governance, with Dougie Pomfret, who manages Fit 4 Life gym.

A volunteer from Severfield, one of our Key Delivery Partners, gave her support to a West Cumbrian fitness firm which aims to enhance its ability to evaluate and demonstrate its social impact.

Fit 4 Life, which has gyms in Maryport, Workington and Whitehaven, looks to improve the health and well-being of all local people. It especially aims to help those with, or at risk of developing, chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes or a stroke.

It posted on the Timebank platform Together for Good asking for guidance to strengthen their evaluation systems and better communicate the value of their work.

Responding, Michaela Lindridge, Head of Environmental, Social and Governance for Severfield, provided tailored support. She undertook an initial consultation to understand Fit 4 Life’s needs and then visited their main centre in Maryport.

The session included a presentation on Social Value Frameworks, plus a discussion on the importance of data capture and reporting, and the development of a customised internal reporting system.

Giving Back

Michaela said: “Giving back to organisations is deeply rooted in me, as I started my career in the charity and not-for-profit sector. To use my skills to support Fit 4 Life at this critical time is not even a question.

“Seeing them embrace the knowledge I’ve shared, and thrive, is a feeling like no other. I’m honoured to help Dougie and his team in their incredible mission.”

Dougie Pomfret, who manages Fit 4 Life, added: “We asked for help with evidencing our social value to strengthen funding applications and our ability to tender for NHS projects.

“Michaela introduced us to tools and methods we hadn’t considered, and her expertise has already made a huge difference.

“This will help us ensure the long-term sustainability of our organisation and continue to improve the health and wellbeing of the people we serve.”

Volunteers spark STEM passion in primary pupils

Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick (BBK) volunteers have helped to inspire the next generation of nuclear workers at a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) event.

Three volunteers from Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick stood at a STEM event with their company banner.

Patrick Connolly, Emily Jones, Jack Stockdale, and Nathan Lucock took part in a two-day engagement event at Whitehaven Academy with 400 primary school pupils aged six to nine.

The event, organised by Cumbria Primary Business Partnership, aimed to ignite early interest in STEM careers, through hands-on learning and innovative activities.

Interactive workshops were designed to captivate young minds. The BBK team led an introduction to magnetism, where they acted as a magnet, attracting or repelling co-hosts to demonstrate magnetic properties. Children were split into groups to explore the science of magnets.

One group tested the magnetic properties of various materials, while the other learned about electro-magnetism and experimented with triggering magnetic reactions.

Armed with worksheets, the students documented their findings, honing both their curiosity and scientific inquiry skills.

The workshops emphasised practical learning, and gave the children a chance to see science in action and discover that STEM can be a fun and rewarding field.

Lasting Impression

The event not only inspired the young participants, but also left a lasting impression on the BBK volunteers. Apprentices Emily and Jack excelled, using the opportunity to develop leadership skills and boost their confidence.

Patrick praised the event as a ‘STEM baptism of fire’ and highlighted the collaborative spirit. He encouraged more colleagues to join future events.

The BBK volunteers said:

“This initiative strengthens ties between local businesses and the community, and offers pupils a glimpse into potential career paths.

“The children’s enthusiasm, and the team’s eagerness to participate, also signal a bright future for this collaboration.

“With such efforts, more young people may realise their passion for STEM, and it can open doors to exciting career opportunities and strengthen the local workforce.”

From Kilimanjaro to Men’s Health

NG Bailey safety advisor Matthew Bailey achieved an extraordinary goal — climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the Steve Prescott Foundation (SPF) – a charity supporting cancer treatment and transplant research.

This challenging journey tested his physical and mental strength while supporting a cause dedicated to helping others. He said:

“I agreed to this challenge after a 30-second call with a friend. It’s so easy to overthink, but sometimes the best decision is just to say yes. The rewards — from training and preparation, to meeting new people and forming lifelong friendships, are truly amazing.”

The climb has inspired him to consider future challenges, including a potential Steve Prescott Foundation expedition in China.

“If I can raise money, meet incredible people, and explore new cultures, I’d be mad not to do it again,” he said.

“Breaking the silence around stress and mental health struggles is vital, as is addressing the stigma of vulnerability,” he explained.

He also emphasised the value of staying active and open.

“Prioritising regular check-ups, staying physically active, and having open conversations can make a massive difference. Taking on challenges like these benefits, not only great causes, but also your own well-being.”

Supporting each other and prioritising health creates stronger communities. Taking that first step, no matter how daunting, can lead to something truly life-changing.

William King Construction introduces innovative solution

One of our supply chain companies, William King Construction, has introduced an innovative solution to enhance safety and efficiency in block cutting operations on our Sellafield Product and Residue Store Retreatment Plant (SRP) project.

Using the Soundex Construction Enclosure, they are significantly reducing noise and dust exposure, demonstrating leadership in on-site safety practices.

The Soundex Construction Enclosure is a versatile and easily movable structure that provides a noise-controlled environment. It features acoustic walls and a roof, designed to absorb and block noise efficiently.

Some of the key features of the Soundex Construction Enclosure are:

Noise Reduction: The enclosure offers up to a 33.6 dBA reduction at 500 Hz, making it highly effective for noisy site operations. It uses sound-attenuating materials, and a live traffic light system provides decibel readings, ensuring ongoing noise monitoring.

Dust Control: The system is equipped with strategic dust extraction points and works in conjunction with devices like the Dustex Dustmaster Pro to maintain a cleaner workspace. Air-fed masks called Filter Face Piece3 (FFP3) are used by operatives, and a built-in water suppression system reduces harmful silica dust from block cutting.

Easy Installation: This 5.7 m enclosure is quick to set up and easily relocates with the site works. It folds down for convenient transportation and can be personalised for hazard control.

Effluent Management: Effluent from block cutting is collected using wet vacs and disposed of through labelled Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC’s), maintaining site cleanliness and environmental compliance.

Providing a Solution

Aaron King, Health and Safety Advisor, said:

“We were tasked with providing a solution for cutting our concrete blocks inside the project building.

“This had never been a requirement as, on previous projects, all block cutting was done outside with a lot of natural ventilation and open space. The task was particularly challenging due to the number of factors involved, including noise, dust, and practicality. Another key factor were the environmental challenges with effluent waste.

“This led us to contact a number of specialist companies, gathering information to compare against one another.

“Once we had amassed key information, we then reviewed it and agreed one product stood out from the rest. This opened up opportunities for a site visit and a demonstration which was very impactful on the choice we made.

“The Soundex construction enclosure enables us to cut blocks in a controlled environment with other trades present whilst also maintaining a safe level of noise for others in surrounding areas, without the need to wear hearing protection.

“The Dustex Dustmaster Pro eliminates all the hazardous silica dust present when cutting the concrete blocks. It filters through a three-stage High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter unit along with a built-in water suppression from the block cutting saw, companied with the wearable air fed FFP3 respirators, this keeps our operatives safe day in, day out.”

William King’s team at SRP has embraced this innovative technology, setting an example for others. Their commitment to minimising noise and dust hazards and improving working conditions is commendable..

ES Steel Solutions aims to bridge skills gap

Working to ensure new talent integrates seamlessly into the nuclear industry, one of our supply chain partners has launched a ‘Welcome to Nuclear’ programme.

ES Steel Solutions, who have worked on PPP on two of our flagship projects, the SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP) and the Sellafield Product and Residue Store Retreatment Plant (SRP), designed the initiative to bring in workers from similar sectors, address the skills gap and upskill workers for the industry.

The company, which is based in Bury, also has an office in West Cumbria, at Kelton House, on Westlakes Science Park.

Jonathan Law, Managing Director of ES Steel Solutions, said:

“We recognised the challenges associated with bridging the skills gap within the nuclear sector, which requires specialist knowledge, expertise, and experience.

“This often makes it difficult to source new talent that can seamlessly integrate this highly regulated and technically demanding field.

“The Welcome to Nuclear programme was developed and launched to address this gap and pave the way for the next generation of talent at ES Steel Solutions.

“It has been designed to supplement our current workforce by bringing in individuals from similar or adjacent sectors and guiding them through the process of adapting to the specific demands of the nuclear sector.

“We support the transition of individuals by addressing key training gaps and providing the learning required to operate safely in the industry.”

ES Steel Solutions is ensuring new members of its growing workforce are prepared and equipped to meet nuclear sector standards.

The Welcome to Nuclear programme helps people not only gain technical knowledge but also receive hands-on experience, which is vital for becoming fully nuclear suitably qualified and experienced personnel (SQEP).

So far, 10 people have come through the initiative with plans for a further 10 in the coming year.

Toni Davis, Operations Manager, said:

“Our experienced team takes a hands-on approach to managing and supporting the training journey.

“Using our integrated systems and databases, we track progress and ensure all trainees meet the necessary milestones.

“By overseeing the entire development process, we ensure new entrants are not only compliant with industry standards but also positioned for long-term success within the sector.”

Client team publishes latest annual report of PPP performance

IC annual report on PPP

Our client team’s fifth annual report of PPP has been published and provides a review of performance between April 2023 and March 2024.

Overall, the report highlights how PPP is contributing significantly to strong project performance, with external reviews identifying a strong internal culture that is adding value to Sellafield Ltd and leading to better outcomes.

The year wasn’t without its challenges, from industrial relations issues to the challenge of generating some stability and maturity in our front-end requirements.

The report also reflects on the response to Sellafield Ltd’s decision to bring the Replacement Analytical Project (RAP) to a strategic pause and the remobilisation of more than 400 people into roles across Sellafield and PPP.

In the report’s foreword, Andy Sharples, Executive Projects Director for Sellafield Ltd, says:

“There is much to be proud of, as the achievements section in this report shows. Be under no illusion, those achievements are not easy wins, they are the result of a huge amount of work from a lot of people not only across the partnership but also across Sellafield Ltd, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Government.

“There is still work to do, but we are implementing standards at a level and pace never seen before on Sellafield projects. I am extremely proud of the achievements made by our partners in year five and I am excited to see the partnership take hold of some new projects in the coming year.”

In response, Duncan Elliott, Head of PPP, added:

“I remain immensely proud and excited to be leading this partnership, and that will only grow as we continue to deliver our purpose over the next 15 years.

“While we have naturally dealt with challenges during year five, there have been many achievements and some real high points in our delivery.

“As I look forward to the next year, I am particularly excited about the new generation of projects coming through. I am delighted that Sellafield Ltd has already enabled us to embed PPP resources into three pipeline projects, recognising the power and value of adopting the PPP way during the earliest possible stages of a project.”

Stay Knowingly Safe with our Mental Fitness Principles

We want our workforce to flourish and staying healthy in body and mind is a key part of our journey to Knowingly Safe. So we have launched our Mental Fitness Principles.

The principles surround: Creating Change, Managing Stress, Sleeping Better, Moving Better, Eating Better, Enhancing Focus, Finding Meaning, Getting Help and Reconnecting.

They will help us in our commitment to creating a safe, healthy and high-performance workplace, where the mental and physical health of employees are valued and prioritised.

Employed adults spend more time working than any other activity during their waking hours and can have a significant impact on our mental health.

It can be positive, giving us a sense of purpose, boosting our self-worth, and providing opportunities to connect with others. But it can also be a source of stress and anxiety and contribute to developing or worsening mental health problems.

Peggy Jackson, PPP Health & Safety Manager, said:

“You can take steps to support your own well-being. Learn techniques to manage stress and stay mindful of changes in your mental health.

“We have created the Mental Fitness Principles, which provide ideas and advice on how to manage your mental fitness and ways of getting help if you are struggling.

“On each of our projects are Mental Health First Aiders / Wellbeing Ambassadors who can offer a listening ear and provide details of resources that are available to you.

“Reach out to your colleagues and line management, they may be unaware that you are struggling.”

Often the hardest thing to do is to start a conversation on mental health. People often ask, ‘how are you?’ when greeting someone. Are we honest when we answer? Are we comfortable enough to say actually, I am not okay?

If you are struggling with your mental wellbeing at work, set a meeting up with your line manager, prepare the things you want to talk about and be honest.

Looking after your mental health is not something we should just do if we are struggling, or feeling low, anxious or stressed. It’s something we should think about all the time and really invest in, just like our physical health.

Meet NG Bailey

NG Bailey logo

As part of the latest instalment in our supplier spotlight series, we’re excited to highlight one of our Key Delivery Partners (KDPs), NG Bailey, a company with over 100 years of expertise in the nuclear industry.

The company’s history with Sellafield Ltd dates back to the 1950s and involvement with Calder Hall – the first nuclear power station in the world to produce electricity for domestic use.

As the second KDP to join our partnership, NG Bailey secured a long-term electrical and instrumental contract alongside Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick in December 2021 and has since established roots in West Cumbria.

The KDP frameworks are part of our partnership’s multi-project procurement model which encourages collaboration throughout the supply chain.

Watch the video by clicking here, to learn more about their work on our major projects, commitment to social impact, local employment, our internship scheme, and more.

Our partnership brings together industry leaders to help Sellafield Ltd deliver one of the largest portfolios of complex major projects in the country, creating facilities that support the site’s decommissioning. Take a look at our supply chain here.

Sellafield partnership appoints final Key Delivery Partners to strengthen supply chain

Programme and Project Partners (PPP) at Sellafield has awarded its final Key Delivery Partners (KDPs) to complete pioneering Tier 2 enterprise.

Altrad Support Services and KAEFER UK & Ireland have signed a multi-million-pound-a-year contract to deliver access solutions, insulation and painting services on PPP and help deliver major projects at Sellafield.

The framework agreement totals approximately £180m over the life of the partnership and sees Altrad Support Services and KAEFER become the final of 10 KDPs to join the PPP enterprise.

As the partnership celebrates its fifth anniversary, the completion of the KDP procurements marks a major milestone for PPP and will strengthen its capability to transform major project delivery at the Sellafield site, the birthplace of the UK’s nuclear industry. The announcement also comes in the same week that PPP Lot Partner KBR opened a new office in West Cumbria, further future-proofing  relationships between PPP, its supply chain and the local community.

The last of the KDP frameworks are part of the partnership’s multi-project procurement model, which encourages long-term collaboration throughout the supply chain, enhancing project delivery and maximising economic and social impact in the West Cumbria region.

PPP has built on Sellafield Ltd’s radical approach to follow a collaborative ‘Project 13’ model when engaging the four PPP Lot Partners for its 20-year major project delivery programme to support the site’s decommissioning. It has taken it an unprecedented two further layers down the supply chain by engaging the main construction contractors through the KDP frameworks, but also with their suppliers on a similar collaborative basis, with the focus now being on developing Tier 3 enterprise partners.

The PPP approach is a first of its kind, developed to draw on the unique expertise brought from each partnering organisation. It is already helping to achieve significant firsts for the nuclear industry and is seeing benefits from quicker engagement and reduced overheads through early contractor involvement. This is helping the partnership realise significant business case benefits and its Critical Success Factors, such as leading the way in safety initiatives and improvements in project delivery excellence through an integrated approach to pipeline management, resourcing, design and governance.

With more than 100 years of work ahead at the site, Sellafield is becoming one of the largest infrastructure projects in the North, generating growth and employment in Cumbria, the North-West of England and beyond.

John Rossiter, PPP’s Head of Supply Chain, said:

“To award the final KDP frameworks and complete the PPP enterprise is a proud moment for everyone involved in the partnership. PPP is changing the dial, creating an enterprise based on commercially aligned, incentivised, long-term contracts, which give surety of work, confidence to invest in the region and puts small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) innovation into the earliest stages of project delivery. The KDPs’ key suppliers are often SMEs that will benefit after PPP from the long-term engagement.

“We’re delighted to welcome Altrad Support Services and KAEFER on board to deliver the access solutions, insulation and painting services framework over the course of the partnership. Now we have completed our core structure, we’re looking forward to building a deeper collaborative ecosystem through multiple supply chain tiers so we can meet our collective commitments and continue to improve major project delivery.”

Paul Raper, Altrad’s Nuclear Decommissioning Director, said:

“We are privileged to be part of this award-winning, collaborative partnership, which reflects the finalisation of the KDP framework delivery model. We look forward to working with the Programme and Project Partner teams and the partner companies to collectively enhance the delivery of major projects at the Sellafield site.

“The 15-year framework enables us to build on our 35-year relationship with Sellafield Ltd, while delivering long-term, sustainable projects which provide local employment opportunities and social value to the West Cumbria community.”

Nick Walters, KAEFER UK & Ireland’s Director for Nuclear and Defence, said:

“We are delighted to join PPP at Sellafield. KAEFER has supported the Sellafield site and local supply chain for over 20 years, with reliable, efficient, and technical industrial services. This award helps secure long-term career paths and development for our existing employees, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for new recruits to enter the nuclear industry with KAEFER. We look forward to getting started on delivering some exciting projects in collaboration with our partners.”
