North West Coast Connections project
National Grid is developing the North West Coast Connections (NWCC) project to connect and export the electricity that will be generated by Moorside, the nuclear power station NuGeneration Ltd is proposing to build near Sellafield in West Cumbria.
This is a major project to connect the largest new nuclear project in Europe and to secure billions of pounds of investment for west Cumbria. The connection is vital to keeping the country’s lights on and helping secure low carbon and affordable electricity for future generations.
Our proposals for the new 400kV connection include approximately 119km of pylon lines, 23.4km of underground cable and a 22km tunnel to carry the connection under Morecambe Bay. We’re also proposing to take down at least one existing ENW 132kV pylon line along the route of the onshore part of the connection.
We’re keen for the project to deliver as much economic benefit as possible for communities in the local area by providing supply chain opportunities and jobs. We encourage local businesses to register their details if they would like to be notified of upcoming opportunities to support the project.
